Resist the Draft:
Why real Americans should move to canada
Ever since the Draft was first instituted during the Civil War, it has justly been a cause of conflict. Draft-dodgers in the age of Lincoln went so far as to hire out other people to take their place for them, a practice that even the most militaristic pro-war citizen today would agree makes modern draft-dodgers at least seem creative and resourceful, if not as the honorable people that they are. "How can you call them honorable?" many will ask. And I will say that not just them, but EVERY just, moral, and patriotic American citizen should oppose the draft institution. The Draft is an extreme act of hypocrisy by America's government. It conflicts with both the rights granted by the 13th amendment condemning non-punishment servitude and 1st amendment rights to freedom of religion- or, perhaps more accurately in this case, freedom of morality. The system harasses innocent people into a survival situation in which they may be forced to abandon their prior beliefs just in order to survive another day. The American Dream itself is what I am calling you to defend- how can a 19 year old boy ever have equal opportunity for a fulfilling life if he is shot trying to defend America's dignity in a war he doesn't support? The draft characteristically discriminates against poor and working class young men, as well as an unequivalent percentage of racial minorities. The wealthy can still afford to have doctors or psychologists write them off as unfit, or simply continue their education through college. Thus the draft has become the chopping block for those people with the least political power, as apparently in America- "land of democracy and home of the free"- our people are not old enough to vote until they have spent several years being old enough to die. Some members of the government have recently even gone so far as suggesting that students no longer receive deferrals for pursuing higher education- which admittedly would make for a more equal system, but would waste even more human potential.
If enough people cannot be found to WILLINGLY support their country's military in a time of war, there is only a single explanation- that the war doesn't have enough popular support and needs to be ended anyway. Choosing to avoid recruitment from a war with which one truly doesn't agree is not an unpatriotic act, but rather an act of standing up for your country and it's values- striving to keep it out of a conflict that is beneath it. From the beginning of our country it has been stated time and time again that government serves to protect it's people, and when the majority decides that war is not worth it to them- or in the case the war we are now, poses negligible risk to anyone in our country- it is for THEM to decide, not Nixon in the White House!
SUPPORT anyone who is in protest of the draft, and use your rights to petition and vote! Should we reach our goal of allowing American men to be free to support the war effort whether they wish to or not, it will not matter whether the war finally comes to a close and the immediate impact is negligible. We are doing a service to future generations of Americans by protesting the draft, protecting their rights in future conflicts, and supporting America's image as a symbol of equality and potential.
